Doha (Introductory Couplets)
जय गणेश गिरिजा सुवन, मंगल मूल सुजान।
कहत अयोध्यादास तुम, देहु अभय वरदान॥
Jai Ganesh Girija Suvan, Mangal Mool Sujan,
Kahat Ayodhyadas Tum, Dehu Abhay Vardan.
Victory to Ganesha, son of Girija (Parvati), the source of auspiciousness and wisdom. Ayodhyadas requests the boon of fearlessness.
Chaupai (Main Verses)
जय गिरिजा पति दीन दयाला।
सदा करत सन्तन प्रतिपाला॥
Jai Girija Pati Deen Dayala,
Sada Karat Santan Pratipala.
Victory to the consort of Girija, the compassionate one who always protects saints.
भाल चन्द्रमा सोहत नीके।
कानन कुण्डल नागफनी के॥
Bhaal Chandrama Sohat Nike,
Kanan Kundal Nagphani Ke.
The moon on your forehead shines beautifully, with serpent earrings in your ears.
अंग गौर शिर गंग बहाये।
मुण्डमाल तन क्षार लगाये॥
Ang Gaur Shir Gang Bahaye,
Mundamal Tan Kshar Lagaye.
Your fair body with Ganga flowing from your head, adorned with a garland of skulls and smeared with ashes.
वस्त्र खाल बाघम्बर सोहे।
छवि को देखि नाग मुनि मोहे॥
Vastra Khaal Baghambar Sohe,
Chhavi Ko Dekhi Naag Muni Mohe.
You wear a tiger skin, and your form enchants serpents and sages.
मैना मातु की हवे दुलारी।
बाम अंग सोहत छवि न्यारी॥
Maina Matu Ki Have Dulari,
Baam Ang Sohat Chhavi Nyari.
Parvati, the beloved daughter of Maina, sits on your left, adding to your unique charm.
कर त्रिशूल सोहत छवि भारी।
करत सदा शत्रुन क्षयकारी॥
Kar Trishul Sohat Chhavi Bhari,
Karat Sada Shatrun Kshaykari.
You hold a trident, looking majestic, always destroying enemies.
नन्दि गणेश सोहैं तहँ कैसे।
सागर मध्य कमल हैं जैसे॥
Nandi Ganesh Sohain Tahan Kaise,
Sagar Madhya Kamal Hain Jaise.
Nandi and Ganesha by your side look splendid, like lotuses in the ocean.
कार्तिक श्याम और गणराऊ।
या छवि को कहि जात न काऊ॥
Kartik Shyam Aur Ganrau,
Ya Chhavi Ko Kahi Jaat Na Kau.
Kartikeya, Shyama, and other attendants are there; your divine form cannot be fully described.
देवन जबहि जाय पुकारा।
तबहि दुख प्रभु आप निवारा॥
Devan Jabahi Jaay Pukara,
Tabahi Dukh Prabhu Aap Nivara.
When the gods call out to you in distress, you remove their sorrows.
किया उपद्रव तारक भारी।
देवन सब मिलि तुमहिं जुहारी॥
Kiya Upadrav Tarak Bhari,
Devan Sab Mili Tumhin Juhari.
The demon Tarak caused chaos, and the gods sought your help.
तुरत षडानन तुम्हेंहि ध्यावा।
अपने सैन्य समेत संहारा॥
Turat Shadanan Tumhenhi Dhyava,
Apne Sainya Samet Sanhara.
Kartikeya meditated on you, and you destroyed Tarak and his army.
अमरेश्वर जब संकट पायो।
तबहि तुम्हेंहि स्मरण लायो॥
Amareshwar Jab Sankat Payo,
Tabahi Tumhenhi Smaran Layo.
When Indra faced danger, he remembered you for help.
रक्षा करि प्रभु आपुहि देखा।
सुरन मध्य तुम्हेंहि बिसेखा॥
Raksha Kari Prabhu Aapuhi Dekha,
Suran Madhya Tumhenhi Bisekh.
You protected him, showing your divine presence among the gods.
भूत पिशाच कबहुँ नहिं आवे।
महादेव जब नाम सुनावे॥
Bhut Pishach Kabahun Nahin Aave,
Mahadev Jab Naam Sunave.
Evil spirits never come near when Mahadev’s name is chanted.
नासे रोग हरै सब पीरा।
जपत निरन्तर शिव शरीरा॥
Nase Rog Harai Sab Peera,
Japat Nirantar Shiv Sharira.
Chanting Shiva’s name continuously eradicates diseases and pains.
जपत महादेव सिद्धि पावे।
और चहुँ आश्रम सुख लावे॥
Japat Mahadev Siddhi Pave,
Aur Chahun Ashram Sukh Lave.
Chanting Mahadev’s name grants siddhi and happiness in all life stages.
जटा जूट भवानी के साथी।
सदा शिव संग रहें मुरारी॥
Jata Joot Bhavani Ke Sathi,
Sada Shiv Sang Rahen Murari.
With matted hair, you are Bhavani’s companion, and Vishnu always stays with you.
दक्ष प्रजापति जब बुलाये।
सती सुतहि तुम्हेंहि दिखाये॥
Daksha Prajapati Jab Bulaye,
Sati Sutahi Tumhenhi Dikhaye.
When Daksha invited you, you showed Sati your divine presence.
दक्ष यज्ञ तब तुम्हेंहि रिझाये।
सती देह त्याग तुम पाये॥
Daksha Yagna Tab Tumhenhi Rijhaye,
Sati Deh Tyag Tum Paye.
During Daksha’s yagna, you were angered, and Sati gave up her body.
ध्यान धरत सब संकट टरत।
शिव सहाय हरत सब जरत॥
Dhyan Dharat Sab Sankat Tarat,
Shiv Sahay Harat Sab Jarat.
Meditating on you removes all troubles; Shiva’s help burns away afflictions.
शिव अनुरागी जो नर गावे।
सो सुख सम्पति लहि सुख पावे॥
Shiv Anuragi Jo Nar Gave,
So Sukh Sampati Lahi Sukh Pave.
Devotees who sing your praises with love attain happiness and wealth.
तुम्हेंहि रिझाये गौतम नारी।
अहिल्या शिला सोहति भारी॥
Tumhenhi Rijhaye Gautam Naari,
Ahilya Shila Sohati Bhari.
You were pleased with Gautam’s wife, Ahilya, and restored her from a stone.
गणपति तुम्हरे पुत्र प्यारे।
सदा रहें शिव पार्वती वारे॥
Ganpati Tumhare Putra Pyare,
Sada Rahen Shiv Parvati Vare.
Ganesha, your beloved son, stays under your and Parvati’s protection.
रुद्राक्ष धारण कर जो जपत।
सो नर पावत परम पद तपत॥
Rudraksh Dharan Kar Jo Japat,
So Nar Pavat Param Pad Tapat.
Those who wear Rudraksha and chant your name attain the highest spiritual state.
तुम्हरे भक्त सदा सुखकारी।
रक्षा करत सन्तन हितकारी॥
Tumhare Bhakt Sada Sukhkari,
Raksha Karat Santan Hitkari.
Your devotees always find happiness; you protect saints for their well-being.
हे शिव शंकर हे करुणाकर।
भक्तन के तुम हो रखवारे॥
He Shiv Shankar He Karunakar,
Bhaktan Ke Tum Ho Rakhware.
O Shiv Shankar, the compassionate one, you are the protector of devotees.
जो यह चालीसा पाठ करावे।
सो सुख सम्पति सुखद लहावे॥
Jo Yah Chalisa Paath Karave,
So Sukh Sampati Sukhad Lahave.
Whoever recites this Chalisa attains happiness, wealth, and joy.
सदा शिव की भक्ति करावे।
सो नर परम पद पावे॥
Sada Shiv Ki Bhakti Karave,
So Nar Param Pad Pave.
Those who worship Shiva always attain the highest state of liberation.
भवसागर से तारणहारा।
शिव शम्भु तुम हो दुखहारा॥
Bhavsagar Se Taranhara,
Shiv Shambhu Tum Ho Dukhahara.
You ferry devotees across the ocean of existence; O Shiv Shambhu, you remove sorrows.
काशी में जो मरण करावे।
सो नर मुक्ति पथ पावे॥
Kashi Mein Jo Maran Karave,
So Nar Mukti Path Pave.
Those who die in Kashi attain the path to liberation.
शिव पुराण जो सुनत सुहाये।
सो नर शिव लोक पाये॥
Shiv Puran Jo Sunat Suhaye,
So Nar Shiv Lok Paye.
Those who listen to the Shiva Purana reach Shiva’s divine abode.
शिव सहस्रनाम जो जपत।
सो नर सिद्धि फल लहत तपत॥
Shiv Sahasranam Jo Japat,
So Nar Siddhi Phal Lahat Tapat.
Chanting Shiva’s thousand names grants siddhi (spiritual success).
शिव महिमा जो गावत नित्य।
सो नर पावत परम पुण्य कृत्य॥
Shiv Mahima Jo Gavat Nitya,
So Nar Pavat Param Punya Kritya.
Singing Shiva’s glories daily brings the highest merit.
भस्म अंग जो लेपत नित्य।
सो नर पावत शिव की कृत्य॥
Bhasm Ang Jo Lepat Nitya,
So Nar Pavat Shiv Ki Kritya.
Applying sacred ash daily brings Shiva’s blessings.
त्रिपुरारी तुम हो दयाला।
भक्तन के सदा सुखदाता॥
Tripurari Tum Ho Dayala,
Bhaktan Ke Sada Sukhdata.
O Tripurari, the compassionate one, you always grant happiness to devotees.
गंगाधर तुम शिर धारण कारी।
सदा भक्तन के रक्षक भारी॥
Gangadhar Tum Shir Dharan Kari,
Sada Bhaktan Ke Rakshak Bhari.
O Gangadhar, you bear the Ganga on your head and always protect devotees.
पार्वती पति तुम जगत आधार।
सदा करत भक्तन उद्धार॥
Parvati Pati Tum Jagat Adhar,
Sada Karat Bhaktan Uddhar.
O consort of Parvati, the foundation of the world, you always uplift devotees.
भोलेनाथ तुम हो करुणाकर।
सदा करत भक्तन रक्षाकर॥
Bholenath Tum Ho Karunakar,
Sada Karat Bhaktan Rakshakar.
O Bholenath, the compassionate one, you always protect devotees.
नीलकंठ तुम हो जगत पाला।
सदा करत भक्तन प्रतिपाला॥
Neelkanth Tum Ho Jagat Pala,
Sada Karat Bhaktan Pratipala.
O Neelkanth, the protector of the world, you always nurture devotees.
हर हर महादेव गुण गावे।
सो नर शिव लोक पावे॥
Har Har Mahadev Gun Gave,
So Nar Shiv Lok Pave.
Those who sing “Har Har Mahadev” and your glories attain Shiva’s divine abode.
Doha (Concluding Couplet)
दोहा लिखित यह चालीसा, शिव भक्ति बलवान।
पढ़त सुनत सुख सम्पति, लहि मिले अभय वरदान॥
Doha Likhit Yah Chalisa, Shiv Bhakti Balwan,
Padhat Sunat Sukh Sampati, Lahi Mile Abhay Vardan.
This Chalisa, written with devotion to Shiva, strengthens faith. Reading or listening to it brings happiness, wealth, and fearlessness.
